31 May – 1 June
After the excitement of the flamingos, it was back to Arles where we spent the night. We were lucky enough to be staying very close to the historic Amphitheatre in town, so were able to visit the next morning.
Would anyone care for some history?! Although based in France, Arles is actually an old Roman town – hence the amphitheatre – dating back to the first century! The amphitheatre has been under re-construction for many years, so parts of it were secured or blocked off altogether, but we did have access to both the lower and upper levels, along with the spectator seating.
Unfortunately it was quite cold and the wind was blowing a gale, but it was still really interesting to explore and imagine what it would have been like during its hey-day. Interestingly enough, it is still used these days for friendly bull-fighting (if such a thing really exists!); but fortunately we were not witness to any event during our visit.
